“Contemporary Rockland Artists”, in the Emerson Gallery at Rockland Center for the Arts, celebrates the present vision of the teaching artists at RoCA. Early founders, Rockland residents and patrons – Helen Hayes, Henry Varnum Poor, Aaron Copland, Paulette Goddard and Burgess Meredith had a goal “to make use of the abundant artistic talent available by offering courses of instruction, arts and crafts exhibitions, lectures….courses of instruction for children and adults of arts and crafts under teachers of a caliber seldom available outside of New York City.”
Seventy years later, RoCA is very fortunate to be continuing the legacy of our founders. The exceptional faculty here actively creates, teaches and exhibits throughout the Hudson Valley and the U.S. We are proud to list just a few of their accomplishments: Pottery teacher Don Bradford has exhibited in the NJ State Museum and Morris Museum. Creative writing instructor Sally Lipton Derringer’s poems have appeared in Poet Lore, The Los Angeles Review and The New York Quarterly. Painting instructor Karen Edelmann teaches in the U.S., France and Italy with Artists Abroad and Afield. Paula Maddawick, drawing instructor, apprenticed to Jasper johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Her drawings have exhibited at Castelli Gallery, Matthew Marks, Silvermine and the Edward Hopper House. Howard Nathenson’s paintings have been shown at The Whitney Museum while Mari Ogihara’s ceramics has exhibited at the Aldrich Museum and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan. Painting instructor John Rosis is a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant recipient and has exhibited at the Berkshire Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
We invite you join us at the opening reception, Sept. 10th, 1-4 pm to experience these extraordinary artists of Rockland. Contemporary Rockland Artists will be on view Sept. 10 – Sept. 24.
