First Friday Gallery Talk: Thomas Cole’s Inner World
October 6, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Original Research by the 2017 Thomas Cole Fellows: Madeline Conley, Rowanne Dean, Adam Grimes, Michael Quituisaca
The 2017 Cole Research Fellows will share their new, original research focused on Thomas Cole, the artist known for ushering in a new form of landscape painting unique to America, and whose vision would inspire the Hudson River School of painting. In their presentations, Cole fellows will share their working research that examines the painter’s interior world and the immediate circle of people with whom he shared his home in Catskill, NY. Their work will be directly incorporated into the upcoming reinterpretation of the second floor of Cole’s historic home, which follows the site’s recent Parlor’s Project, where the first floor of the artist’s home was historically restored and reinterpreted.
Through their presentations, four new perspectives and avenues of interpretation will offer a glimpse into Cole’s inner world that few have known. This will include making heard the voices of the women with whom Cole lived and offering new insights on the artist’s inner thoughts, writings, artistic decisions, and will reveal the house to be more than just restored period rooms, but a home where generations of one family lived and worked.
