HSN: Marydell – Over Ninety Years – Serving – Mentoring – Caring! Exhibit
January 20, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 1:00pm on Saturday, repeating until February 24, 2018
As days grow shorter and anticipation of the holiday season gradually preoccupies our lives, we invite you to step outside the bustle for a while. Treat yourself to a nostalgic glimpse of timeless moments in the lives of the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine from 1924 to now. Follow their steadfast pursuit of their mission of caring for the needy, serving the local community, preserving the land, advocating for peace.
A photo retrospective traces their work: restoring a derelict farm; establishing a summer camp for the immigrants they minister to in their settlement house on the Lower East Side; establishing a novitiate for prospective members of their community, then creating the Marydell Faith and Life Center and transferring 30 acres to the Palisades Park Commission as their mission adapts to the realities of a dwindling community.
In addition to a remarkable collection of photographs, newspaper articles, and similar memoribilia, you will find a replica of their Peace Pole, and observe a gnome from the famous “Gnomes of Marydell,” memorialized in song by former Nyacker, John Babcock.
This exhibit opens on December 2, 2017, and can be seen on all following Saturdays through January and February 2018, from 1 pm to 4 pm.
