ROCKLAND VOICES
Highlights from the Permanent Collection of the HSRC

featuring a special display on Rockland County
and 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage in New York State

When: May 10–November 5, 2017: Wednesdays–Fridays & Sundays, 12–4 pm
Where: History Center Galleries, 20 Zukor Road, New City
Admission: $FREE (donations greatly appreciated!)

Our semi-permanent exhibition illustrating Rockland County’s rich history has reopened for a new season.

New for 2017: From Seneca Falls to New York City’s Lower East Side, from Buffalo to Brooklyn, people in New York State led the women’s suffrage movement from 1848 until suffrage was legalized in New York State in 1917. In that time, the struggle enlisted thousands of women (and men) over several generations, including Rockland County’s own Caroline Lexow Babcock, Mrs. Robert E. Leber, Mrs. Willam A. Serven, Ethel Mann and Fannie Hard. Learn about these important suffragists and more through objects, photographs, and letters in this mini-exhibit mounted as part of the statewide Centennial commemoration of the women’s vote in New York.

Through highlights from the HSRC’s permanent collection, visitors will also learn about several elements that make up Rockland’s history. The core exhibition explores:

– The Lenape
– The Dutch
– Treason of the Revolution
– Slavery
– The Nyack Turnpike.

Rockland Voices has been made possible by a grant from the Sterling Bank Charitable Foundation. Our thanks also to Katherine Fulmor, granddaughter of Caroline Lexow Babcock, for objects on loan to the mini-exhibition on women’s suffrage.
