SEARCHING FOR STILLNESS
Rockland Center for the Arts kicks off its’ 2019 exhibition season exploring the power of art to transform and heal.
How can art be used as a healing tool? Is it in the stillness in a piece of artwork that we find a spiritual awakening that heals our soul or gives us a clearer vision of why we are here? Is it the whisper of the divine we hear or feel as an artist meditatively creates his work that we are immediately and inexplicable moved by? Can art be the vehicle through which we find purpose and meaning in tumultuous or cataclysmic events?
In Searching for Stillness, Rockland artist Norman Galinsky addresses all of these questions through his artwork. Galinsky’s abstract geometric art has been inspired and informed by his background in science and engineering, and his ongoing interest and study of meditative and energy healing disciplines and consciousness explorations. Galinsky believes that art expression is energy itself – an aspect of what the Chinese term Qi, the universal life energy. His works are a practice of focus both on the intention of the work and the attention to his process-oriented designs. The images depict a “stillness in motion”, drawing the viewer into a meditative dialog with the present moment. The work seems to pulsate with energy, suggesting waves of particles vibrating through the work as though in it has created its own universe. Symmetry and circular imagery form a “stillness.” If one contemplates on this stillness, they may feel an awakening to a universal consciousness or their own inner vision of being connected to all of life.
Galinsky has had solo exhibitions at the Hall of Science, Queens, NY, The Art Gallery at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Sleepy Hollow, NY, Union Arts Center, Sparkill, NY and the Jock Truman Gallery, NY, NY. His works are in the collections of IBM, Continental Illinois Bank, Exxon-Mobil Oil Corp., Hyatt Regency Hotels, Pepsico, Columbia University, Charleston Art Gallery and Museum and the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum. Art in America, Art Speak, IArts Magazine and the New York Times have featured his works.
