THE INNER FRONTIER: IT’S COMPLICATED
Oct. 6 – Nov. 3, 2019
In the exhibition, The Inner Frontier: It’s Complicated, opening at the Lagstein Gallery, glass artist Barbara Galazzo utilizes glass as a medium to reflect on the dynamics of relationships among people, and within the self. As a student of relationships and self-reflection, Galazzo has pondered and observed within and without on these two subjects. Relationships are inescapable, whether it is familial, friendly, professional or romantic. There always seem to be questions. How do our inner thoughts and beliefs get reflected back to us from outside circumstances? How do we treat our neighbors or bordering countries? Do we spend our lives travelling different pathways only to find that they all lead to the same place – self-discovery and love? Are there obstacles or distance with loved ones? Can one incident or one person help us to either brighten our inner light and shine like a diamond or do we allow them to cause us to dim our light and become small?
Glass as a medium is fragile, sturdy, utilitarian, sculptural, transparent and opaque all at the same time. “The transparency of glass,” says Galazzo, “reminds me of the strength and at the same time the fragility of life. It mimics people and life all at once.” Its shape is created by movement: the movement of heat and flow – like a dance with the material. Galazzo found glass after a successful career as a ballet dancer. It was the brilliant colors of glass that first drew her to the medium over 20 years ago and helped her realize her next career step.
“I meld light and color into kaleidoscopic windows of movement, through this seductive medium. The movement, the vibrancy of the colors, and the light reflecting off the colors pull you into a hypnotic state and demands that you look at it in awe.”
She has won a Niche Magazine award and was a recipient of the American Craft Council Mentorship Program. She has participated at S.O.F.A. Chicago, Glass Now at the National Liberty Museum, and Urban Glass. Her work has been exhibited at Bullseye Glass at WG@BEII in Portland, OR, and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Louisville, KY.
Besides running Galazzo Glass, Barbara is the Exhibitions Director at Rockland Center for the Arts. As a curator, Galazzo has developed projects such as the ArtFull Designer Show House and her former gallery space, Gallery 66 NY in Cold Spring, NY. Expanding her work from object to installation, Galazzo’s work has translated into large scale commissions for such institutions as the Mayo Clinic, MN and Kaiser Permanente in DC and CA.
