FIRST FRIDAY EVENTS
An All-Hopper Evening of Poetry
Friday, October 2, 7 PM
Nyack poet Maxine Silverman will read “Our Year of Edward Hopper” from her newest collection Momentarily, and Carole Stone, a New Jersey poet, will read from Hurt, The Shadow: the Josephine Hopper Poems. Both poets have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and are the recipients of numerous awards, fellowships and residencies.
In addition to her chapbooks and two books of poetry (Transport of the Aim, a garland of poems on the lives of Emily Dickinson, TW Higginson and Celia Thaxter from Parallel Press and Palimpsest from Dos Madres Press), Maxine Silverman (www.maxinegsilverman.com) has also created collage and assemblage inspired by Hopper’s paintings. Carole Stone is the author of seven chapbooks and four books of poetry, most recently American Rhapsody (Cavan Kerry Press). As Harvey Shapiro said of Hurt, The Shadow (Dos Madres Press), “Edward Hopper’s paintings fascinate poets because they contain the essence of American loneliness.” Jo Hopper, his wife, model and muse, fascinates Stone even more. A book sale and signing will follow the readings.
See Memory, A Film by Viviane Silvera (2015, running time 22 min.)
Friday, November 6, 2015, 7 PM
In 2014, artist Viviane Silvera exhibited paintings from her series “Film Project: Therapy,” which payed homage to Edward Hopper’s work through the literal and unspoken relationships between light, the psychological, the solitary, and the cinematic–dominant themes in Hopper’s work. Silvera returns to the Edward Hopper House on November 6th to present and discuss the resultant film, See Memory, a stop-motion film made out of 15,000 painting stills. See Memory explores how our memories define who we are, how we remember, and the inextricable link between memory and imagination.
