SUMMARY:Perry Lawson Fine Art Presents: Bending the Arc
DESCRIPTION:Perry Lawson Fine Art is pleased to present Bending the Arc\, a national juried exhibition featuring artwork that explores the complexities of human values\, such as respect\, empathy\, integrity\, and moral courage. The title is drawn from an idea referenced by Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, that “the arc of the moral universe is long\, but it bends toward justice.” \nThe twenty-five artists in this exhibition span a wide range of practices\, working in sculpture\, digital media\, painting\, and printmaking. Each engages with the theme in their own way: some present abstract works that convey tension or transformation; others take a narrative approach to illustrate hope or destructive forces; still others use metaphor or symbolism to express their reckoning with the world. \nThese works were selected through an open call by juror Claire Koelling\, an arts professional based in New York City who currently serves as Senior Exhibitions Manager at Gagosian Gallery. \nGallery Hours: Friday-Sunday\, 12-5 PM \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, January 24\, 3-5 PM

SUMMARY:Film Screenng: Losing Ground
DESCRIPTION:A Rivertown Film 25th Year Special Event\nLosing Ground\nDirected by Kathleen Collins\nWith Seret Scott\, Bill Gunn\, Duane Jones\nUSA\, 1982\, 84 minutes \nWhen the artist husband of a philosophy professor (based on the Rockland County filmmaker) sells a painting to a major museum he decides the couple should head off to the country for the summer\, and picks Haverstraw because he feels drawn to the landscape\, the light\, and “those Puerto Rican ladies.” \nLosing Ground is one of the first feature films directed by a Black woman. Lost for decades\, it was the opening night film of  the seminal Film Society of Lincoln Center series\, “Black Independents in New York\, 1968-1986\,” presented in 2015. It’s rave reviews quickly led its first ever theatrical run\, and had it received more than just a few screenings when it was made it would have been recognized as one of the most important and original films of its time (“A cinematic masterwork” – Richard Brody\, The New Yorker). \nThis will be only the 3rd public screening of Losing Ground in Rockland County (home of Kathleen Collings). Rivertown Film presented the first screening\, via virtual theater\, during Covid. \nThis screening of Losing Ground will include a discussion with Nina and Emilio Collins\, the daughter and son of Kathleen Collins\, who were both raised in Nyack and attended local schools. Cast and crew members will also be present.

SUMMARY:Rivertown Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:58 Depew Avenue Nyack\, NY 1096 \n(845) 353-2568 \n  \nContact: Patricia Schneider/Publicist \n(917) 612-2675 \n  \nThe Reality of Living with Severe Mental Illness Explored in Documentary \n  \nJanuary 2026 – Rivertown Film takes a deep dive into one of the most urgent yet overlooked crises in America: the harsh truth about dealing with mental illness every day when it presents “No One Cares About Crazy People” on Wednesday\, January 28th at the Nyack Center (58 Depew Ave.\, Nyack). \n  \nThe documentary was inspired by Ron Powers’ acclaimed book of the same name – a hybrid narrative of tragic family memoir and searing social history. The film follows families and individuals who are struggling with schizophrenia\, bipolar and other disorders\, all trapped in the clutches of a dysfunctional system. Concurrently\, a growing movement of national advocates are introduced. \n  \nDirector Gail Freedman delivers a film that’s both intimate and wide-reaching. We witness as author Powers\, whose two sons are schizophrenic\, come to terms with the suicide of one of those sons. He and his wife are ushered into the “sub-nation” of those with serious mental illnesses\, a third of whom go untreated. We also meet the Burgos family\, whose husband and father suffers from severe bi-polar disorder\, enveloping the family in crisis after crisis. Finally\, the heartrending tale of Mark Rippee\, a psychotic\, blind and homeless man unfolds. Despite the ministrations of his two sisters\, Rippee is unable to transcend his grim reality. \n  \nThe film also presents the birth of a national grassroots movement to radically reform our broken care systems. California\, the epicenter of serious mental illness reform\, now has its Governor and state legislature responding to public pressure with bold and controversial initiatives.  These are followed over the course of three years\, with Governor Gavin Newsom sitting for an interview. “No One Cares About Crazy People” harnesses the power of storytelling as a tool for change\, while galvanizing public discussion. \n  \nThere will be a post-film discussion with Gail Freeman and the film’s editor\, Dina Potocki\, as well as Alyssa Schmidt\, Vice President of Mobile Support Services at Greater Mental Health of New York\, based in Valley Cottage. The Community Partner for the film is Greater Mental Health of New York. \n  \nDoors to the Nyack Center open at 7:30pm\, and the film begins at 8pm. Tickets are $13/General Admission\, $11/Students & Seniors\, and $9/Rivertown Film Members More information can be found at rivertownfilm.org. \n  \nRivertown Film is a non-profit organization which was founded in 2001. Their mission is devoted to celebrating\, exploring and promoting the art of the motion picture through film screenings and educational programs. The organization is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts and with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and our corporate sponsors are Elena Schloss\, Happy Dwellings with Elena/ Julia B. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5
DESCRIPTION:Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5\nDirected by Raoul Peck\nUSA/France\, 2025\, 119 minutes \nGeorge Orwell was one of the most radical and visionary authors of the 20th Century\, whose 1940s novels\, such as 1984 and Animal Farm\, foretold a chilling\, all-to-believable authoritarian future. Acclaimed director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro)\, working with the Orwell Estate\, weaves together historical clips\, readings from Orwell’s diary\, cinematic references\, and dynamic modern day footage to craft a definitive portrait and an entirely fresh take on how relevant and prophetic his work has become. \nDiscussion to be announced. \n

SUMMARY:Screening off the documentary "Orwell: 2+2=5"
DESCRIPTION:58 Depew Avenue Nyack\, NY 1096 \n(845) 353-2568 \nContact: Patricia Schneider/Publicist \n(917) 612-2675 \nAuthoritarian Power\, Past & Present is Explored in “Orwell: 2+2=5 “ At Rivertown Film \n  \nJanuary 2026 – George Orwell was a prophetic writer whose interest in the subject of totalitarianism became the basis for his books\, Animal Farm and 1984. On Wednesday\, February 11th Rivertown Film will screen the documentary  “Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5” at the Nyack Center (58 Depew Ave.\, Enter on Broadway). \nThis essayistic film\, directed by Raoul Peck\, is a work of visceral urgency – heady\, enlivening\, and disturbing. Anchored by Orwell’s writing\, Peck charts his life in tandem with world-shattering events.  A line from one of Orwell’s essays\, “My starting point is always a feeling of partisanship\, a sense of injustice” – could serve as an artistic statement for Peck\, whose family fled Haiti under the Duvalier dictatorship. The director is clearly intrigued by Orwell the man\, but he isn’t solely interested in the biographical basics. He’s more interested by the writer’s relationship to the world he harrowingly diagnosed. Peck juxtaposes past and present issues-George W. Bush speaking about Iraq in 2002\, the Israeli Palestinian conflicts and the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capital-to create a through-line. The film is less 1984 than it is 2025. \nThere will be a discussion after the film with the produce/director\, Alex Gibney\, who won an Academy Award for his documentary “Taxi to the Dark Side”\, and moderated by writer and director Susanna Styron. \nDoors to the Nyack Center open at 7:30pm\, and the film begins at 8pm. Tickets are $13/General admission\, $11/Students & Seniors\, and $9/Rivertown Film Members More information can be found at rivertownfilm.org.  \nRivertown Film is a non-profit organization which was founded in 2001. Their mission is devoted to celebrating\, exploring and promoting the art of the motion picture through film screenings and educational programs. SUMMARY:How To Stop Postponing Your Creative Desire: A writing and movement gathering to open creatively through the Body\, The Pen and Community.
DESCRIPTION:A writing and movement workshop with the body the pen and the muses. Foreplay with the life you want on Valentines Eve.\n\n\n\nDesire doesn’t come from effort.\nIt comes from contact with what already supports us. \nSo many of us live in a constant state of “not now.”\nWe keep it together. We stay productive. We behave. \nWe work. We caret ake. We numb.\nWe tell ourselves we’ll want things later—when there’s more time\, more energy\, more certainty. \nBut Valentine’s Eve has a way of tapping the glass. \nThis evening is a ritual space to meet creative desire safely\, playfully\, and without pressure—not as something to act on immediately\, but as something to listen to\, be accompanied by\, and resource with. \nThis gathering was inspired by the work of poet Leila Chatti\, whose writing emerged during a time when she could not write at all. In order to survive\, she turned toward other voices\, other writers\, other muses—trusting that her creative spirit would not let her die. \nThat gesture became the teaching. \nThis is not a night about clarifying goals or demanding answers from desire.\nIt’s about letting something supportive meet you. \nWhat we’ll explore\nThink less self-improvement.\nMore foreplay. \nThrough choice-led movement\, reflective writing\, music\, and shared witnessing\, we’ll invite the muses in—not to perform for us\, but to accompany us. \nWe’ll work with: \n\nMovement as an embodied creative practice (nothing pushed\, nothing forced)\nWriting as a way of listening—not producing\nMusic as a doorway to relief\, rhythm\, and inspiration\nWitnessing as a way to soften shame and restore connection\n\nWe’ll explore desire not as urgency or fantasy\, but as creative fuel—a signal from the body and imagination about what nourishes you\, what’s missing\, and what wants care. \nThis is for you if:\n\nYou keep postponing what you want\nYou feel a quiet internal shift—but fall back into numbing or overworking\nYou’re laughing less\, wanting less\, feeling dulled or distant\nYou sense desire stirring\, but don’t want to blow your life up\nYou’re craving community\, expression\, and relief more than answers\n\nThese patterns aren’t flaws to fix.\nThey’re intelligent ways the nervous system keeps us safe when something new begins to wake up. \nThis evening isn’t about ripping them away.\nIt’s about meeting them with curiosity—and letting them soften in relationship. \nWhat this night is not\n\nNot about fixing yourself\nNot about deciding your future\nNot about blowing your life up\n\nIt’s about remembering that wanting does not have to be dangerous—and that desire\, when met with care\, can reconnect you to vitality\, imagination\, and possibility. \nYou don’t have to know what you want.\nYou just have to be willing to meet it. \nAbout your Host: \nKelly Jo Lillian is a body-centered creative guide\, coach\, poet\, and trauma-informed educator with over a decade of experience supporting people in reconnecting with their voice\, creativity\, and sense of aliveness. After leaving a twelve-year career in theater to teach special education in the South Bronx\, Kelly Jo reached a breaking point—new parenthood\, chronic exhaustion\, and a nervous system pushed beyond capacity made it clear something had to change. Reconnecting with creativity became the doorway back to herself\, leading her into therapy\, writing circles\, performance\, and embodiment communities where she was witnessed and supported in listening to her inner knowing again. That lived experience shapes her work today. Drawing from her background in theater and storytelling\, eleven years in trauma-informed education\, and ongoing teacher training in Body Temple Dance\, Kelly Jo weaves body-based and creative practices inspired by Authentic Movement and The Artist’s Way. She believes creativity does not thrive in shame or isolation—it needs relationship\, witnessing\, and care—and when honored\, it can guide us back to lives that feel alive\, aligned\, and genuinely our own. \nFor More information visit her website: www.kellyjolillian.com \nInstagram @liberated.creative \nPodcast: Ink And Alchemy \nTestimonials \n“At Kelly Jo’s most recent gathering\, when we were invited to name an intention\, my mind went to a screenplay idea that’s been evolving since I was 13—something that had always felt more like a pipe dream than anything real. One of those ideas you love but have no idea how to start. Not long after\, I found myself actually playing with it\, and it’s happening. I’m learning how to write it as I go\, but the characters have started to gel and show me what they want to do and say\, and I’m figuring out how to listen and put it on the page. Beyond being a nourishing and creative experience in itself\, it truly feels like the space Kelly Jo created was part of the catalyst that got the magic started\, and I’m really grateful for that.” – K.S – writer/actress \n““The whole ride home\, I kept thinking about how meaningful it was to be in a space that gave permission—to be creative\, to be childlike\, and to do so without shame. As a mom\, I struggle with giving myself permission to be creative\, or even to do things just for me. Being in this space was such a welcome opportunity.” – Courtney S- mom/filmmaker \n“Kelly Jo creates a space where creativity is gently awakened and the lost parts of yourself are lovingly welcomed back home.” – Art T. Emobdied Astrolger/Healer/Writer
