The life and works of a seminal artist of the 20th century, South African photographer Ernest Cole. Denouncing apartheid with the publication of his 1967 photo book House of Bondage, Cole then lived in exile in the US, where he documented New York City and the American South, observing echoes of the country he left behind. In 2017, 60,000 negatives of his work were found in a Swedish bank safe.
