Rivertown Film’s 25th Anniversary Season Begins with Documentary “Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World”
August 2026 – To kick off their Silver Anniversary Fall season Rivertown Film is waxing poetic. The first film on their schedule is “Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World on September 16th at the Nyack Center (58 Depew Avenue, Nyack).
Mary Oliver, who died in 2019, had an avid fan base, including Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Colbert, and John Waters. She was a best-selling poet, whose readers loved the spiritual and nature loving cast of her work. You could also say she was a poet for even those who don’t read poetry.
Director Sasha Waters rounds out biographical information, beginning with Oliver’s difficult childhood and ending with her passing at age 83. Using archival footage, photographs, recording and new nature imagery shot in Provincetown, where Oliver and her partner Molly Malone Cook lived for years, to outline her story. The film’s strength lies in the conversations with its participants – including Steve Bucemi and John Waters – about what Oliver meant in both her writing and to the world. The difficulties that poets in America face in making a living and being taken seriously are also discussed. Oliver’s poetry worked on both formal and emotional levels.
Hudson Valley Poet H.E. Fisher will read some of her poetry after the film. The Community Partner for the evening is All Ways Writing.
