April 30, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Saturday, repeating until April 30, 2022

Experience Nyack during the Gilded Age in the Historical Society of the Nyacks’ exhibit of the works of two early Nyack photographers.  Isaac Van Wagner was a commercial photographer with studios in Nyack from 1871 to 1886. About 1890, Frank Brush, a photography enthusiast, began capturing local outdoor images. In addition to a wide variety of still shots from both photographers, you will be able to view three-dimensional photographs of Nyack made by Van Wagner through use of an antique stereoscope viewer. A rare glass negative of the Old ’76 House made by Frank Brush 130 years ago is displayed along with original and more recent positive prints.

Cabinet portraits of villagers depict the Victorian-era styles of dress in portraits of Nyack villagers. Detailed interior and exterior photos of Undercliff, one of Upper Nyack’s first riverside estates, reveal how the well-to-do lived during the Gilded Age. Photos of village and rural life complete a picture of Nyack during its rapid growth in the late 19th century.

The exhibit continues through April on ensuing Saturdays, 1-4pm.

The Historical Society of the Nyacks museum is located at 50 Piermont Ave. with an entrance from the Nyack Library parking lot.
