Founded in 1978, the store was initially owned by Lenny and Linda Sullivan, who laid the foundation for its reputation as a trusted local resource. In 1996, a young Joe Monterey, newly arrived from the Philippines, joined the team. With a strong family background in the hardware business—his sister owns a hardware store back home—Joe quickly became an integral part of the operation. In 2009, Joe took over ownership from Lenny, continuing the store’s legacy while infusing it with his own dedication to community and quality service.

Today, Joe runs Herb Lack Paints & Hardware alongside his son Glenn, who transitioned from his own construction company to help manage the store full-time. Joe’s wife, Arlyn, now retired, also pitches in to support the family business. Together, they continue to build on the store’s reputation for excellent customer service, reliability, and an extensive selection of products.

The store offers everything from top-quality paints—featuring premium brands like Benjamin Moore—to tools, small electrical repairs, key duplication, and even window glass and screen repairs. Whether you’re a local contractor looking for specialized materials or a homeowner tackling a weekend project, Herb Lack Paints & Hardware has you covered. “We try to carry everything you could possibly need,” says Glenn. “If we don’t have it, you probably don’t need it!”

Joe reflects on the long-term relationships the store has fostered, saying, “We’ve watched kids grow up, become homeowners, and then bring their own kids in. It’s what makes this place so special.” The shop’s small-town charm, combined with its comprehensive inventory, makes it a beloved institution for both regular customers and new faces alike.

Joe, who has been a part of the Nyack business community since the late ’90s, remains passionate about the store’s role in the town’s fabric. As he looks ahead, he hopes Glenn will carry on the legacy, ensuring Herb Lack Paints & Hardware remains a trusted fixture in Nyack for many years to come. “This isn’t just a hardware store,” Joe says. “It’s part of the heart and soul of Nyack.”
