There’s no need for devotees of fresh food and produce, baked delicacies, savory spreads and sweet “somethings” to hibernate this winter. It’s time for community, food and fun to move indoors once again for Nyack’s fourth annual Winter Farmers’ Market at the Nyack Center. The Market opens at 8:00 am on Thursday, December 3rd in the Nyack Center at 58 Depew Avenue (corner of Depew and South Broadway.)
Free parking is available during Market hours in the Cedar/Artopee lot and, as a reminder, street parking is always free in Nyack every morning until 11am.
The indoor Market picks up where the outdoor Farmers’ Market left off the day before Thanksgiving, and will continue every Thursday from 8:00am to 2:00pm during the winter months through March 24, 2016. (The Market will be open Christmas Eve, December 24, 2015; the Market will be closed on New Years’ Eve, December 31.) The outdoor Market reopens on March 31, 2016.
Jeff Doctorow and Friends will provide musical accompaniment for opening day. An impressive line-up of local performers — offering a wide range of musical styles from Irish fiddling to classic rock — will regale Market patrons every week through the winter months, adding a festive note to the shopping experience.
The Nyack Market specializes in local, seasonal produce, baked goods and artisan wares, and offers great opportunities for holiday gift-shopping — offering unique items such as the now-famous Nyack note cards, canvas market bags and book of sketches and essays by artist-in-residence Bill Batson — plus hand-made clothing and toys for children, natural skin care treatments, soaps and lotions, and much more.
Building on the success enjoyed by Nyack’s outdoor Farmers’ Market, the indoor Winter Market is a partnership between the Nyack Chamber of Commerce and the Nyack Center. Sponsorship is generously provided by Rivertown Magazine, Nyack News & Views, Natural Awakenings, Solar Maximum, and Green Mountain Energy. The Market also acknowledges the hard work of the market manager, vendors and a team of dedicated volunteers.
“We’re excited to continue to offer this valuable resource to the Nyack community,” said Scott Baird, President of the Nyack Chamber. “The Nyack Winter Farmer’s Market Indoors at the Nyack Center is a focal point for families who value healthy lifestyles, and a bright spot in the Village during the cold winter months.”
The Market allows shoppers to use a credit card or SNAP benefits card to get tokens that can be spent with many of the market vendors, making it easier for those on public assistance to have access to fresh, locally grown food. Interested shoppers can get assistance from the market manager and take advantage of this convenient way to buy goods at the market.
The vendor line-up for this winter promises both “tried and true” vendors — and some new twists. New vendors include Blooming Hill Farm (offering a broad range of produce used by some of the finest restaurants in Manhattan) Catskill Fungi (mushrooms and health tinctures), Petropoulos Family Groves (locally bottled olives and olive oil) and Wild Sea Salt (nutritious seasonings). New craft vendors include Kid Essence, Katartic and Sally Ann Designs. Click here for a fun list of vendors.
“We’re building a new tradition in Nyack with the Winter Farmers’ Market, and we expect it will enjoy a long and fruitful life in the heart of our special Village,” added Baird. “We are looking forward to seeing our Nyack Farmer’s Market regulars along with new friends and neighbors from nearby towns who love good food, fresh local products and the special home-made delicacies you can’t find in any supermarket.”
