Here’s a run down of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • The Rockland County Jazz & Blues Society opens its Carnegie Concert Jazz Series with a performance by world class alto saxophonist, Lee Konitz. He’s backed by Cameron Brown on bass, George Schuller on drums, and Richard Sussman on piano. 7:30p at The Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Nyack Village Theatre stages its production of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, three One-Acts directed by Richard Quinn. 8p, at Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St.
  • Prohibition River showcases acoustic musicians every Friday night in the Upstairs Lounge. This week’s performer is Dump – James McNew, the bassist of Yo La Tengo. No cover. 9p, 82 Main St.

Saturday

  • Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory opens its doors for its annual Open House on Science On The Palisades. Scientists share their research through lab tours, talks, and kid-friendly hands-on demonstrations. Tons of fun – and educational, too! 10a-4p, at 61 Rt 9W, Palisades. Parking available at the IBM Palisades Conference Center on Rt 9W, just north of the LDEO campus. Shuttle buses run continuously.
  • Join with Keep Rockland Beautiful to help clean up our community because Clean Streets = Clean Streams. Meet and greet (9a) at the Nyack Pour House, followed by the clean up effort in and around the village. Return for a delicious ‘thank you’ lunch provided by Nyack Pour House. From 9a-1p, 102 Main Street.
  • Mountain Bike Polo Tournament. Registration Forms available at Village Hall oronline. 9a-3p. Memorial Park, Piermont Ave.
  • The second annual Smoke-N-Fire Food Fest gives you a chance to indulge in spicy and non-spicy food alike! Spicy eating contests, food sampling, and family-friendly entertainment. $5 per person with a portion of ticket sales benefiting the local charity,Baking Memories 4 Kids. 11a-6p rain or shine at Provident Bank Park in Pomona.
  • The Nyack Saturday Farmer’s Market features local farmers, florists, food and craft artisans. River Acoustics Band performs from 10a-12n. 8a-1p, Main Street parking lot.
  • The Children’s Shakespeare Theatre hosts an evening of choral music featuring the elite chamber choir, Ghostlight. The funds raised will support CST’s 16th Season at The Union Arts Center. The evening will include savory tapas, wine and sweets. 7p at 2 Union Ave, Sparkill.
  • Artoberfest celebrates the works of artists from the Hudson Valley including a special exhibit honoring the photographer, Ned Harris. Festivities include student/faculty exhibitions, student music, and interactive youth workshops. Sat-Sun at 12n. Hosted by the Garner Arts Center, 55 W Railroad Ave, Garnerville.
  • Nyack College Homecoming Weekend presents the Running Warrior 5K road race & 3K walk. Proceeds benefit the Nyack College Cross-Country program and David McClain, the father of an alumna suffering from ALS. Registration takes place between 7:30a and 8:30a, followed by a pre-race ceremony. 9a start at Moseley Field, Nyack College, 1 S Boulevard.

Sunday

  • ACADA, the Art, Craft & Antiques Dealers Association, hosts the final Nyack Street Fairof the season. 10a–5p.
  • Calling all yard sale aficionados! Join 30+ families as they sell their used goods to benefit the Nursery School of the Nyacks. 9a-12n at Grace Church on the corner of First and Franklin.
  • Lace up your sneakers for the annual “Blow Away Cancer” Breast Cancer Run & Walk. Post-race refreshments provided. Sponsored by the Nyack Hospital Foundation. Race begins at 9a. Nyack Hospital, 160 N Midland Ave
  • Building Bridges Concert, a fundraiser for the Rockland Coalition to End the New Jim Crow, will bring together those opposed to contemporary forms of racism. Live music, dance, and poetry. Featured guest speakers include George Garmon and Chief Dwaine Perry. Suggested donation of $20 per person or $10 under age 25. 2-4:30p. Fellowship of Reconciliation, 251 N. Broadway.

Next Week

“Politics, Peace and Treason: Nyack in the Civil War” will be presented by Brian Jennings, Reference Librarian and Local History Specialist at the New City Library. This program educates us on how Nyack pre-1860s was not an anti-slavery community. The program will be presented first in the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway, at 7p Wednesday evening, October 15and will be repeated the following afternoon, Thursday, October 16 at 2p in the Valley Cottage Library on Route 303.
