Elmwood Playhouse presents the powerful and incredibly moving family drama “Awake And Sing” by Clifford Odets, one of the most powerfully poetic playwrights and Jewish voices in American theater. Set in the politically charged depression era, Awake and Sing centers on the Berger family, an impoverished Jewish family pursuing the American dream in the Bronx. As the Berger parents scheme to manipulate their children’s relationships to fit their own visions of a better future, their children question, struggle and strive for dreams of their own.

Directed by Alan Demovsky, the Elmwood cast features: Stavros Adamides, Andrew Beadle, Arthur Chill, Andrew Greenway, Andre Herzegovitch, Jimmy Lugo, Sara Parcesepe, Robin Peck, and Larry Wilbur.

Distinguished by poetic, metaphor-laden street talk, Odets’ dramatic style offers both modern social commentary and an ancestral glimpse of history.
